Dr. Wilsa Charles Malveaux

Psychiatrist, Former Athlete, First-Generation American

As a first-generation American and the proud daughter of immigrants from the Caribbean (Jamaica and Grenada), who came to the United States as adults and themselves became doctors, Dr. Wilsa Charles Malveaux has excelled not only academically (National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society Inductee), but also athletically in her life.

Though she was a 4-sport athlete from youth through high school (Soccer, Basketball, Cheerleading, and Track and Field), she was a multi-time Junior Olympian in Track and Field, and was recruited across the nation for both Soccer and Track & Field Scholarships. Dr. Wilsa was also selected to compete internationally in the Junior Pan Am Games for Track and field as well as on the American Ambassadors Girls Soccer team. Growing up an athlete in four sports, founder Dr. Charles Malveaux was no stranger to the pressures and difficulties of being a high-performing athlete. After suffering a broken ankle in the fall of 1995, it was hard and took years for Dr. Wilsa to get back to the Olympic qualifying bar she had set for herself.

After suffering a broken ankle in the fall of 1995, it was hard and took years for Dr. Wilsa to get back to the Olympic qualifying bar she had set for herself.

Following the year 2000, a devastating subpar last year running at Stanford, and the repeated injuries and surgeries, she decided to retire and attend medical school with the intention of being an orthopedic surgeon who would serve the needs of elite athletes, and ensure they understood the future implications of their choices as they pursued their dreams. Over time, reflecting on the mental and emotional challenges of athletes; experiencing the emotional ups and downs of a professional track career cut short; re-evaluating her vision for what a successful career path and work-life balance would look like; and recalling her natural gifts and fascination with psychology combined with her passion for helping others through the emotional side of life’s adversities; Dr. Charles Malveaux’s interests turned to psychiatry.

She worked harder than ever before, and despite the new pressures and politics of college sports and being a scholarship athlete, combined with a repeatedly changing coaching roster, she found success as a top sprinter in the then Pac 10, earning valuable points for her team at each Pac 10 Championship. In the year 2000, she was offered a spot on Grenada’s Olympic Track & Field team, but due to a nagging injury, the thought that there would be another chance in the future, and insecurity about being able to perform at the level she desired, she turned the opportunity down. That year Dr. Charles Malveaux had what turned into the first of 4 surgical procedures over 4 years to address her injuries, all in the hopes of returning to the Olympic level.
